Model railroading are not mere toys, but are modeled after their real-life counterparts, with great attention to detail. Those involved in this hobby of caboose and train are interested in building realistic landscapes. For those just starting out on this caboose hobby, there are some things to be kept in mind. Model railroading is a hobby that requires a lot of space. Even if you were working on a small scale, it would require a minimum of at least 16 square feet space, i. As time goes on, people long for more space to build their little world. When involving children, adult supervision is necessary, so this makes a great family hobby. In addition to teaching kids a little history, the hobby provides a creative outlet for both parents and children. A larger, more durable scale might be required depending on the age of the child. When considering a manufacturer, quality should be given preference over price. Track layout, basic wiring, and scenery are important aspects of the hobby.

Understanding ‘real’ railroads allows you to recreate favorite railroads, gain operational ideas for your toy train layout and learn background information about locomotives, passenger trains, stations, freight cars and railroaders who operate them.

Model railroading are out of date almost before the first printing is in the stores. I have the “the complete book of model railroading” from many years ago. It’s fun to read to see the state of the hobbby in the 60′s. While some of it is still applicable, most of it is very dated. The hobby has been not stood still long enough for a complete book to remain the “bible” very long. With improvements in control systems, plastics, scenery materials, etc continuing, i don’t see this changing. If you’re having fun, you’re doing it the right way.

Model railroading are numerous, but probably most significant is my music–i perform with a band. I’d prefer not to leave links as my band is extremely offensive and grotesque and i would hate to ruin my nice-guy image with photos of the things i do on stage. Now i’m curious to what matter of “extremely offensive” you mean. Your profile photo looks like edward norton in the movie “american history x”.

During the thursday work days, bill pitches in with debugging of circuit problems as well as in the gradual effort to get more of the mainline and yard tracks operational. He’s also a part of the most recent project with the small gauge guys, creating an n-scale version of the rochester subway, and is part of our substation team too. But “working on the railroad” is just part of the job. We need trained volunteers to run the layout whenever visitors drop in on sundays, and for the many group tours we host each year. Bill is always willing to make the drive to the museum for such duty, keeping a major attraction at nymt in operation. By the way, more than once bill (and the other model rails too) has been called on to help out with a “situation” during. Versatility is the key to successful group visits, and when a track car balks or more people show up than expected, it’s great to have a versatile guy like bill around to help solve the problem. Bill’s background reaches back to the steam days on the new york central as a tower operator.
